We asked our winners some questions about their designs and here’s what Syami said!
1. Can you tell us a bit about your design process?
I got this idea for my design after I saw a Gong with Air Muleh pattern during my visit to Pusat Kesenian recently, in the silverware section. The Air Muleh caught my attention so I started digitalizing it on Adobe Illustrator. At first, I did it with full colour, then changed it to outlines after doing some more research about modern t-shirt design. The design is inspired by the Japanese graphic tee design.
2. How long did it take you to come up with this design and the outcome?
– The overall execution did not take too long but I think the experimenting bit took a bit of time. I tried out a lot of the Air Muleh design on other musical instruments. I tried it with Gulingtangan, Gong, Gandang Labik, Guriding and Koroney. I did experiment with colours too but ended up choosing black and white.
3. Why did you pick this?
– I chose this theme because I wanted to know more about Gulingtangan Orchestra and local musical instruments used by other tribes in Brunei. Nowadays, traditional music is less known to the new generation. My purpose for this pattern design is to for it to be locally recognised and for the existence of Brunei’s traditional musical instrument to not be lost on the younger generation.
