We asked our winners some questions about their designs and here’s what Wafiuddin had to say!
1. Can you tell us a bit about your design process?
After doing some research for this, I decided to focus on the ancient folklores tales which I believe was the origin story of the Washing Feet Ceremony for Tutong Weddings ‘Adat Basuh Kaki’. I wanted to incorporate 2 elements specifically from Ádat Basuh Kaki’ which is the tiger and the weapon ‘Keris’. To develop the pattern design I made design drafts of my ideas then I used Adobe Illustrator software to finalize the pattern design.
2. How long did it take you to come up with this design and the final outcome?
It took almost a month because I had to make extensive research on the topic to get accurate information before I proceeded to the design.
3. Why did you pick this?
The theme of this competition is based on design heritage, hence why I chose the origin story of Ádat Basuh Kaki’ also to be known as ‘Buri Puo’ in Tutong dialect. This project allowed me to create a pattern design to understand the value of Brunei legends and explore the unknown stories behind every legend that has been around for hundreds of years. To convey the message through design intervention that has full of meaning and exposing to the younger generation and the communities about Brunei heritage.
